Quadratic polynomials

"
...the set of complex values of c for which the orbit of 0 under iteration of the complex quadratic polynomial zn+1 = zn2 + c remains bounded. That is, a complex number, c, is in the Mandelbrot set if, when starting with z0 = 0 and applying the iteration repeatedly, the absolute value of zn never exceeds a certain number (that number depends on c) however large n gets.

For example, letting c = 1 gives the sequence 0, 1, 2, 5, 26,…, which tends to infinity. As this sequence is unbounded, 1 is not an element of the Mandelbrot set.

On the other hand, c = i (where i is defined as i² = -1) gives the sequence 0, i, (−1 + i), −i, (−1 + i), −i…, which is bounded and so i belongs to the Mandelbrot set..." [source]

All the shuddering, churning way to the 13-minute epic Twilight / Delay
's arias of feedback, Mandelbrot's Effect / Delay (Highpoint Lowlife) - tipped here the other day - smartly slaloms in & out of a whole set of post-rock tropes.

Not just the "quiet - loud - louder - FUCKING APOCALYPTIC" schema Keung quotes with evident approval or the similar 'prettily chiming/ferociously distorting' one. Its working of a host of crescendoing repetitions & fuzzy warpings add up to rather more than a PS to Explosions in the Sky - thankfully...

In this, HPLL's comment about electronic syntax & language is right on-the-money. Even if the palette is different, the sensibility clearly processes & shapes this more propulsive way.

Blurb:
Mandelbrot is the sometime solo project by Keung Mandelbrot. After the release of 2006's 'All Our Actions Are Constantly Repeated', the original lineup of the band slowly dissolved as each pulled in their own direction. Amidst the changes, Keung found himself focusing more on exploring further the array of 9v devices his guitar was being channelled through, and this tracks on this album slowly came about during that summer.

Each of the four movements recorded were captured in one take - 10 fingers, 6 strings, 18 pedals, and no overdubs, creating a massive pulsing noise that resonates between harmony and dischord, combining influences from David Pajo's seminal 'Papa M' project, to the density of Sunn O))'s bowelshaking sound, yet processed and shaped into the syntax and language of something altogether more electronic sounding.

Album is released digitally, plus in a limited physical run of 100 CDrs, packaged in slimline DVD-r cases.

Fine rain falling

Welsh harps haven't often featured on LMYE, despite the principality being just down the road. Still, a trip back into subtle
neo-classical/ambient territory with the post-Deaf Center Nest is at least a start in correcting this shabby omission...

Igloo, mapsadaisical, the Milk Factory & tokafi have all already weighed in on the expanded nest EP (now Retold) that marked the relaunch/reinvention of Serein at the start of this year. So there's little more to do now than tip hats, doff caps & once again scramble on to their illustrious coattails months after the event - hear streams of two rapt
new-generation tracks & an equally entrancing pair of limpid MP3s from the original netlabel release (still up on archive.org, by the way) below...

"drugged out rodents"

Granted, an Aidan Baker or thisquietarmy version (or for that drone-metal matter Mandelbrot - launching new HPLL album on Thursday night, by the way...)
might have been preferable for a bit more edge. But this Banjo or Freakout remix of the Allez-Allez spin-off Walls - in which BoF is also a partner (please keep up!) - still generates enough blissy reverbed traction to remind us how fine Burnt Sienna & the Pantha du Prince/Field remixes were & stoke our clamour for the new album (stream)...

72 seconds

A slivery shudder of wispy yearning - a minute footnote to an earlier piece on Ithaca Trio, 72 seconds of an improbable (& unrecognisable) cover to bookend the epic earlier three-quarters of an hour "ambient post-rock generative" remix...

Kaya (Teaser) by Ithaca Trio

Below, Ithaca's new-ish Brown Bear - "
a dark, creeping, anxious drone composition performed on guitar, tape, and broken cymbals" (rather more creeping & anxious in the second half than the near-bucolic first, to these ears...) - & its beguiling predecessors Tesla Verses the Night & the free Oxe.

International Standard Audiovisual Number

Hissing, clanging intricacies winningly entwined - life has been poorer without ISAN's blanketing
analogue warmth. Now though, as noted, the trans-North Sea 'tronica partnership ("tone poems on the aural autobahn between Sweden and Southend") is back in action with the forthcoming Glow in the Dark Safari Set (morr music). From which, the endearingly stately (& downloadable...) bleeps of Channel Ten:

Finally, having thrilled to
their February King's Place show (streaming below if you somehow neglected it...), you'll want to hear ISAN's Robin friskily live on home turf for Telephasic a few years back - the two are also combining for "an evening of laid-back electronica" quite soon:

Silvery wine flowing

Lukid's often vital SoundCloud streams don't tend to hang about (the last one was gone in days, though the excellent woozy one before that remains up), so you shouldn't either: take in the nicely nagging, snappily shuffling Boxing club & the found voice snippet Outside Marathon below while you still can...

Modestly moving, more subtle than simple (it's all about that higher, quavering tone fringing the stately piano...) - an edit of Rameses III's compelling, coming For Jose Maria (Under the Spire) that demands you hear more...

Dusk to dawn

If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of...
Demdike Stare. Modern Lovers strip away the exotica to construct a deeply out-there pair of post-techno gems - the unsettling, rattling Dawn version's remote pounding particularly catches these ears, but Dusk's segue from beautifully grinding menace into spitting, shimmering tone poem is pretty special too.

Hard to dispute the great Philip Sherburne's breathless
assessment...

Mogul re-up

Plenty else out there needs a first round of coverage, granted. But rediscovering Somfay's quite exceptional Allez-Allez remix - & in a stream with built-in d/l & without 7-day expiry - demands instant re-up (previous coverage)...

"
an awesome ambient krautronica version by Somfay - so much to admire in his sustained 10-minute Doubled Up Foldable Iona Rarity (whatever that is!) excursion: that affecting, plaintive organ line, the skittery, ultra-dry beats, the subtle tensions & sense of bare containment, the swelling clouds of noise, the bell-rung ending..."

Butterfly mantissa

Lately these ears have been more attuned to the ambient-drone-experimental end of the spectrum. But the exuberance & intelligence of Floating Points - one of LMYE's 10 'emerging' artists of 2009 - still stands out, a kind of future boogie (you might even call it neuroscientific, given his day job) constructed on a fuzzy warmth/dryly crisp pairing of fat, burbling synths, compelling shuffle-rolls & claps (perfected in the gauzy Esthian Three), & endearing frills like the glowing Peroration's suite of Clangers whistles, the loping, squirming near-breakdown of his Make Me Stronger remix, that ethereal voice on the exemplary K&G Beat, & the acidic ripples of Peoples Potential...

Below, stream
10 hand-picked tracks & mixes. More FP sounds here (nine further bits & bobs, & another here recently). Discogs.

Oh, & can't mention FP without mini-FP Roof Light (previous coverage, & here):
the coming Highpoint Lowlife album is extravagantly diverse, & often darker & slower than expected...

Ancient and modern

Like Cabaret Voltaire reimagined by Sbtrkt or s p a t i a l,
T++ delivers ghostly, fluttering distortions freighted on bone-dry beats for a release that apparently signals the end - of this Profrock persona, at least...

"The T++ project bows out triumphantly, with its most expressive, energetic and fully-realised work. Snapping 2-step garage rhythms are at the heart of all four epics. Notwithstanding the distress, deconstruction and detournement they undergo, the spirit and swing of the British soundsystem tradition is unmistakable. Further, these are kinds of remixes, shot through with the contorted samples of voice and ndingidi from a handful of old East African 78s (collected on a forthcoming Honest Jon's compilation). At once ancient and modern, possessing a unique tonal language, and with it a curious, almost occult power."

Vibrating string

Highlight of this Kning Disk-broked, neo-classical collision (descendent of this one, apparently): Ben Lauber's hugely resonant, intensely quavering Sadludium...

"A wild collaboration between the Berlin music scene and some the most vibrating artists from Göteborg!

Midaircondo, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Pacific!, Studio, Jaqee, Jaw Lesson aka Hajen, Silverbullit, El Perro Del Mar, José González, Fox Machine, Ebbot Lundberg (The Soundtrack of Our Lives) and Jmy Haze are among those local artists that collaborate with representatives of the art-electro-collective Warren Suicide, the production company Transporterraum and the Party Arty beat poetry club from Berlin in the music-art-project "The Göteborg String Theory".

Selected songs by mentioned artists were arranged by the composers Nackt, Ben Lauber and Nils Tegen for the string quartet Qvartiett and other classical musicians. Together with the artists the new renditions were rehearsed and documented during a five day workshop and then performed for the first time at the Clandestino Festival."

"Recently a couple of tracks you worked on with Zomby emerged on your blog. Are there more to come? Maybe…we talk a lot, and sporadically play with ideas, but that’s about it for the moment. My only impression of Zomby is informed by the music he has written…most of which is pretty special."

Pan-galactic preamble

You know Four Tet, of course, & can hardly fail to have taken in the gargantuan, pan-galactic reach of & adulation for There Is Love In You. But as a preamble to a long-overdue (& largely finished - no, really...) piece on the neuroscientific boogie of Floating Points & a reminder to self that Angel Echoes remains a delicately tasty treat - here's the swirling, gently epic FP remix of Sing plus a rather more ferociously epic live deconstruction of AE (alongside a lo-frills version).
